YDJN HOLDS ONLINE TRAINING IN DATA JOURNALISM

“Despite the war and poor Internet service, however, we could take part in a training workshop on the basic of data journalism and acquire new information,” said journalist Basam al-Qadi, describing the training course held by Yemen’s Data Journalists Network alongside the Studies and Economic Media Center (SEMC).
Thirty journalists- males and females-hailing from most Yemeni provinces- got engaged in an online two- session training function, a new experience in Yemen, where direct training grapples with numerous obstacles to movement beside the risks from the war currently raging on in the country.
Mohammed Ismail, the Network’s coordinator, says, “defining the concept of data journalism, its rules and its significance being a new type of journalism does help convert databases and givens into accessible and understandable visuals,”.
He added that the training focused on the phases of reporting and news stories supplemented by data, which start with questing for figures and statistics and then dissecting and altering same into informative that easily grabs the attention of readers. “This course comes at a time when there’s pressing need for such kind of modern journalism, which provides journalists with state-of-the-art techniques that enable them to keep abreast of the audience’s interests and craft an interesting newsworthy work ,” one participant Basam Ghaber said. “The function has been particularly wonderful, given that it was held online, something that lends new fresh touches to it. Its upside was that it defines notions and topics which we started working on from the onset,” adds Basam.
Another participant Fatima al-Ansi said: “This sort of training has met what I have long aspiring for. During the first sessions of the training, we have learned myriad data journalism concepts which we vowed to put into practice by producing data-based journalistic work while directly guided by the trainer. Indeed, this reflects the real benefits we have gained from the program, “.
The function comes as part of a holistic training program seeking to enable some 30 journalists acquire data journalism skills, including by producing several data-based news stories during the upcoming stage. The schedule involves yet another number of training sessions, including production of learning video footages with an aim to project new tools and platforms that help members of the network to come up with striking data-based news stories and reports.

The network, the first ever of its kind in Yemen, kicked off last March under the slogan “For modern data-based journalism in Yemen”. It aimed at boosting the presence of data journalism on Yemen’s media landscape through building the capacities of Yemeni journalists and disseminating the techniques and tools of this sort of journalism to make it usable by the country’s media personnel.
