In the closing\nsession, programs director at SEMC, Hamdi Rasam, explained that the workshop is\none in a series of workshops that make up a program targeting 15 governorates,\nthe first was implemented in Taiz, the second in Aden, and the third here in\nHadramout. The program is being implemented by SEMC in partnership with the UNFPA.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThe skills you\nacquired in this training workshop are just the first step in the journey. We hope\nto proceed with the same enthusiasm and determination that we have seen during\nthe training phase,\u201d Rassam urges participants, stressing that he is waiting\nfor their stories that address gender-based violence and reproductive health issues\nin their local communities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
For her part,\nUNFPA Liaison Officer, Ms. Fahmiya al-Futaih said, \u201cUNFPA is conducting this\nseries of training workshops across the country this year which marks the 25th<\/sup>\nanniversary of the historic International Conference on Population and\nDevelopment (ICPD), in which reproductive issues and rights and gender-based\nviolence were first recognized. This year, world leaders, including media\nprofessionals, will meet again in Nairobi in November to renew their pledges and\ncommitments to these issues. UNFPA counts on the role of journalists in raising\nsocial awareness of these issues and promoting the ICPD agenda in Yemen.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n Trainer\nBassam Ghobar explains<\/strong> that the workshop seeks to create\njournalism focusing on humanitarian issues, especially on gender-based violence\nand reproductive health.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Ghobar pointed\nout that the workshop enables journalists to acquire skills needed in this type\nof journalism, including selection of stories, access to sources, and methods\nof writing these stories based on state-of-the-art journalistic techniques and\nethical principles that take these issues into account.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Ghada\nAl-Husseini, a journalist from Mareb,<\/strong> said, \u201cI have attended lots of\ntraining workshops, but I benefited from this workshop most. I acquired\nvaluable skills and information, especially as training included practical activities.\nI especially learned techniques of searching for and verification of information,\nas well as methods of writing humanitarian stories on gender-based violence.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n Hani\nJoud, a participant from Sayoun,<\/strong> said, \u201cThe workshop added much to\nmy knowledge and skills. It consisted of theoretical lessons, scientific\nconcepts, and field work that will benefit us in practice in a way that contributes\nto improvement of performance and keeps us informed of new trends in journalism\nand helps us address social issues clearly and comprehensively.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n Mathhaba,\na participant from Mukalla,<\/strong> stated, “I was ignorant of\nsome concepts and writing methods of humanitarian stories because I always\nimagined it as a literary genre. I also learned new reproductive health and\ngender concepts. It was a comprehensive and useful workshop that added much to\nmy knowledge.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n Further confirming\nthe fact that the workshop was helpful, Adnan Al-Mansouri, a journalist from\nShabwa, <\/strong>states, \u201cThe workshop was a threshold to humanitarian journalism. It\nconstitutes a milestone marking a shift towards caring for simple people, touching\ntheir concerns, problems, and doing them justice by communicating voices of the\nvulnerable. Through the workshop, I am taking the first step towards realizing\nthis dream.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n This attitude\nis also expressed by Safa ba Akaba, a participant from Mukalla, <\/strong>“It\nwas a new professional workshop for me on sensitive humanitarian issues that were\nnot sufficiently covered by the media. I learned many new things. The workshop\nalso helped me assess risks while producing stories on sensitive issues, and\nintroduced me to many new concepts that enrich my career as a journalist.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n SEMC is a\nnon-profit civil society organization promoting a successful and transparent\neconomic system through training and raising awareness of economic issues, and enhancing\ntransparency and citizen participation in decision-making.
