The \u2018Yemeni Journalists\nfor ICPD Network  was launched by a\nnumber of Yemeni journalists. The network encompasses journalists from 15\nYemeni governorates. These journalists had participated in a training program\non writing humanitarian stories on gender-based violence and reproductive\nhealth issues implemented by the Studies and Economic Media Center (SEMC) and with\nsupport from the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The network is\nthe first entity in the country that brings together journalists specialized in\nwriting on population and development issues. It aims to push forward the\nagenda of the International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD) through\nprofessional media coverage and to highlight gender-based violence and\nreproductive health issues by writing stories on such issues from a humanitarian\nperspective and training Yemeni journalists to write humanitarian stories on\nthose issues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cLaunching the\nnetwork is the outcome of in-depth discussions and intensive training of\njournalists over the past two years by the Center and with support from UNFPA. We\nhope that the network will be a significant step forward in the development of\nthis type of journalism in Yemen,\u201d said program director at SEMC and network coordinator,\nHamdi Rassam.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Winning stories\nof the \u2018population and development\u2019 award were announced during the Network inaugural\nceremony. The annual award, which is sponsored by SEMC in cooperation with the UNFPA,\nhas been organized for the second year successively. It is awarded to the best stories\ntackling population and development issues, including gender-based violence and\nreproductive health issues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The first prize\nin Taiz governorate was awarded to Ms. Rania Abdullah for her story entitled \u2018Al-Samadi:\nlab specialist struggling with life in the qat market<\/a>,\u2019 while\nsecond prize was won by Weaam Abdulmalik for her story \u2018Reproduction\nin wartime: Risking the future of children<\/a>\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Winners of the\nbest stories award in other governorates where training workshops where held will\nbe announced in the next few days.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A specialized\nadvisory committee from SEMC, UNFPA, and the experts evaluated the stories\nsubmitted by the journalists according to the following criteria: novelty of the\nidea and topic of the story, the journalist\u2019s neutrality in presenting\nopinions, coherence and cohesion, diversity of sources, adherence to the\nstandards of writing on gender-related issues, and proposing solutions to the\nproblem tackled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to\nHamdi Rassam, following the training program, which targeted 95 journalists in more\nthan 15 Yemeni governorates, more than 47 stories on population and development\nissues meeting the standards of good writing on gender-based violence were produced.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Winner of first\nplace, Rania Abdullah, said, \u201cI was overwhelmingly happy when I came to know\nthat I won first prize of the Population and Development Award. I dedicate this\nachievement to my city, Taiz, and to every woman bereaved because of the war in\nthis city. This award endows me with a greater incentive to convey and highlight\nthe suffering of women.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She adds, \u201cMy article\ntells the story of a female university student who was forced by the war and\nthe difficult conditions after her father\u2019s death at the beginning of the war\nto sell qat in order to support her family. She continued to sell qat and persisted\non pursuing her university education at the Department of Medical Laboratories,\nchallenging community customs according to which she went too far by working at\nthe qat market. She completed her degree successfully, realizing her dream of\nbecoming a laboratory specialist.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For her part, winner\nof second prize, Weaam Abdulmalik, said, \u201cI was happy to know that I was one of\nthe winners of the award. Such activities constitute a strong impetus to\njournalist to continue their positive contributions in such a difficult time for\nYemenis. This and other activities by SEMC and UNFPA are particularly\nsignificant under the current conditions imposed by the war.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cMy story was\nabout family planning.\u201d Weaam adds. \u201cThere is a steady increase in the number\nof births. This is a burden for many citizens due to the war and the high costs\nof living. Therefore, it will be difficult for families to carry out their\nduties towards their children as they should.  I searched for women who resorted to family\nplanning to ensure building a well-planned family and who feared for lives of\ntheir children as obstacles might arise in the future or because of the ongoing\nwar. I listened to women telling their stories and also covered the\npsychological aspect to convince readers of how important family planning is, especially\nas suffering is not limited to the children but can also extend to mothers who\nmight lose their life due to the lack of medical services in some areas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The event was\nattended by Deputy Director of the Office of Social Affairs and Labor in Taiz governorate,\nMr. Fuad Abdullah.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
