<\/figure>\n\n\n\nThe training program is\naimed to provide trainees with media techniques and skills in accordance with\nthe guidelines and ethics of child-sensitive journalism for the first time in\nYemen.For his part, Media and Communication Officer at UNICEF, Kamal\nAl-Wazeeza, describes the training program as gaining special importance in the\ncurrent circumstances. He states that it meets a real need for children,\njournalists and the Yemeni society in general, in light of the exceptional\nsituation Yemen has been living for more than 5 years during which the\nsuffering of children has exacerbated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Al-Wazeeza points out\nthat it is important that journalists possess the knowledge and skills related\nto the guidelines and ethics of child-sensitive journalism, so that children\nare not exposed to any physical or moral harm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Al-Wazeeza adds,\n“Through this program, which is implemented in cooperation with the\nStudies and Economic Media Center, we seek to enhance the presence of child\nrights issues in the Yemeni press, by building the capacity of journalists and\nsupporting the production of press materials.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Launching the\n\u2018Journalists for a Safe Childhood\u2019 NetworkAt the end of the training program,\nSEMC launched the \u2018Journalists for a Safe Childhood\u2019 Network.The Network aims\nto support efforts related to the protection of children, preserving their\nrights, and respecting their privacy during press coverage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Network constitutes\na channel joining together the efforts of journalists and media institutions in\nYemen. The goal is to initiate a wider media coverage of children’s issues and\nrights, especially in light of the intensification of the conflict that has\nresulted in high rates of violation of children’s rights and doubled children\u2019s\nsuffering and dropout from education over the last five years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Trainer Yassin Al-Zakri,\nwho was in charge of the online training, stated, “The training program\ncontributes to providing a protection cover and a mechanism for caring for\nchildren and their rights, by providing Yemeni journalists with reporting\nskills that respect the principles and ethics of child-sensitive journalism in\nparticular and human rights sensitive journalism in general.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“Yasmin Munir, a\njournalist who participated in the training, said: “Through this training\nwe acquired a lot of information and skills. We realized how the issue does not\nstop at just coverage. Rather, it is necessary to strictly adhere to the\nstandards and ethics of child-sensitive journalism to avoid exposing children\nor any of their family members to danger.”She added, “We must also\ncarry out complementary awareness programs and organize advocacy campaigns\nwhenever the need arises.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“Mohammad Amin,\nanother journalist participating in a training workshop, pointed out the\nimportance of the workshop, saying, \u201cThe training workshop was important to me\nand to all fellow participating journalists, especially in light of the\nincreasing violation of children’s rights and privacy in Yemen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
This becomes evidently clear in light of the\ncomplete absence of press coverage that adheres to the ethics of child rights\nsensitive journalism as well as the journalistic skills necessary to promote,\nsupport and enhance these rights in the media and public opinion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
