Participants in a webinar organized by the Yemeni Media Freedoms Observatory (Marsadak) of the Studies and Economic Media Center (SEMC) called for stronger protection of journalists and enhanced support for the sustainability of independent media institutions. They emphasized that Yemeni journalism faces growing challenges that threaten its independence and ability to survive amid the ongoing conflict.<\/p>\n
The remarks were made during a discussion webinar held by the Marsadak in conjunction with Yemeni Press Day under the title \u201cYemeni Journalism Between Structural Transformations and Legal Protection.\u201d<\/em> The event brought together journalists, media professionals, and experts from within Yemen and abroad.<\/p>\n Journalist Badea Sultan<\/strong> reviewed the state of Yemeni journalism throughout the years of war, noting that the media sector has been subjected to widespread targeting, leading to the decline of many media institutions and negatively affecting journalists\u2019 professional and living conditions. He added that media workers face security risks as well as economic and psychological pressures, forcing many to leave the profession or continue working under conditions lacking protection and stability.<\/p>\n For his part, Mustafa Nasr, Chairman of the SEMC<\/strong>, discussed the economic impact of the war on the media sector. He explained that the suspension of salaries, rising operational costs, the shrinking advertising market, and the absence of sustainable funding sources have weakened the ability of media institutions to continue operating. He stressed that these conditions have increased the fragility of the media environment and opened the door to various forms of polarization and influence over journalistic work. He called for the development of more sustainable funding models and stronger cooperation among media organizations.<\/p>\n Meanwhile, Amina Tayeb<\/strong>, MENA Legal Affairs Officer at Article 19<\/strong>, explained that international humanitarian law and international human rights law provide clear protection for journalists as civilians during armed conflicts. She emphasized that this protection can only be lost in exceptional and narrowly defined circumstances involving direct participation in hostilities, in accordance with strict legal standards.
