Joint relief committee takes shape in Taiz

Participants in the consultative meeting on partnership between the private and civil society organizations have agreed to form a joint committee to coordinate relief efforts in Taiz governorate. The meeting, organized Wednesday by SEMC to boost humanitarian action in Taiz, have come up with a number of recommendations for boosting partnership between the private sector, NGOs and local councils. The participants stressed the importance of adopting the criteria of transparency and credibility when offering humanitarian aid. They further affirmed the need for reinvigorating commercial and economic activities in Taiz, in addition to revitalizing security apparatuses and the judiciary, which are considered as basic components for reactivity economic activities. They also stressed the importance of revitalizing Taiz central bank in such a way as to reactivate revenue-generating institutions in order to enhance the performance of state institutions. For his part, Mustafa Nassr, SEMC’s chairman, pointed out that it is highly important to create a conducive climate for reinvigorating commercial activities in Taiz by taking necessary measures by state institutions to prop up the judiciary and security services to enhance the role of private corporations in achieving development. At the opening ceremony, Mohammed Ismail, SEMC’s executive director, confirmed that the meeting comes in a series of meetings that aim at shedding light on the significance of recouping commercial and industrial activities in Taiz by proposing solutions that help bring life in the city to normality in a way that reflects positively on citizens’ lives. Ahmed Al-Mujahid, director of trade and industry office in the governorate, pointed out the difficulties facing the industrial and commercial sector in Taiz, indicating that the meeting a step in the right direction towards revitalizing state institutions that currently tackle many issues. Hafia Kasssim, representative of relief coalition in Taiz, stressed the necessity of boosting partnership between Yemenis social segments in a way that helps offer humanitarian aid, as well as of exchanging information on humanitarian action between all sectors. A number of work-papers were presented during the meeting, including a paper presented by Hamdi Rasam on the interventions of relief organizations, a presentation by Mohammed Ismail on the impacts of war on the private sector , a paper on the chances of reactivating commercial and industrial activities in Taiz, which was presented by Dr. Adel Al-Zuaitiri, and a presentation on the opportunities of enhancing partnership between the private sector and local NGOs in terms of humanitarian aid. The meeting was attended by a number of economists and representatives of the private sectors , Taiz executive offices , and relief outfits.
