The Media Freedoms Observatory in Yemen released its monthly report “Infographic” on the status of media freedoms and the arbitrary practices against journalists and media outlets, documented (5) cases of of violations during the month of March 2025.
The violations recorded by the Observatory have varied 1 case arrests and 2 cases Detention and 1case incitement 1 case the Tow prosecution of journalist over media activit.
The Observatory recorded violations in the governorates of Taiz, Sana’a, Aden, Hadhramaut.
Harassment and Prosecutions
Journalists in Hadhramout are subjected to ongoing harassment and interrogation by local security and judicial authorities due to their writings. The most recent incident involved summoning journalist Ali Al-Khalaki after he criticized the local authorities while being hosted by a TV channel.
Several other journalists, including Tareq Basloom and Ali Al-Obathani, continue to face prosecution before the Public Funds Prosecution and Courts on charges related to their publications.
On May 5, a court sentenced journalist Ali Al-Obathani to six months in prison (suspended) and fined him 200,000 Yemeni riyals, over Facebook posts in which he criticized Hadhramout University performance.
