Media Freedom Violation Report – Yemen – 2015

2015 was the worst, bloodiest and most repressive year for media freedoms in Yemen. Since the seizure by Houthis of Sana’a in September 2014, and subsequent events most prominent of which was the  launch  of the Saudi-led  Decisive Storm Operation in support of the legitimate government of President Abd Rabbu Mansur Hadi, Yemen has taken a new , serious u-turn in terms of the violations committed against journalists and media outlets in general. Assaults were committed against journalists and social media activists in several areas in Yemen, with the number of violations recorded during 2015 put at 350. These included killings, torture, attempted murder, storming and looting of houses and media institutions, shutting down and confiscating newspapers and blacking out and hacking news sites.
