SEMC launches an initiative to honor journalists that specialized in financial decentralization

Studies & Economic Media Center (SEMC) organizes a training course for journalists on “fiscal decentralization in Yemen” under the patronage of ministry of Local Administration and funded by U.S.-Middle East Partnership Initiative ( MEPI).

In the opening ceremony of the training, Mr. Mustafa Nasr, Chairman of SEMC, announced an initiative to reward the specialized journalists who will write reports, articles and investigations that aim to raise social awareness about fiscal decentralization , implementing its basic principles and advocating fiscal decentralization issues in Yemen.

Mr. Nasr clarified that the training course aimed to train 25 persons of media representatives in Yemen on fiscal decentralization and mechanisms of media advocacy for implementing fiscal decentralization in the upcoming stage, especially that Yemen will adopt federalism system during the next coming years. Mr. Nasr stressed on the role of journalists in monitoring fiscal decentralization’s structure to come in line with Yemeni citizens’ wishes, and devolution of powers from the center to the regions , states and districts.

” our role as media and civil society is to contribute in laying the right foundation for the future, in order to not come after a few years to announce the failure of fiscal federalism in Yemen as the current failed experience of local administration”, SEMC Chairman pointed out.

From his part, MEPI administrator in Yemen Mr. Abdulmuin Azzan confirmed the importance of the training workshop that SEMC is implementing in partnership with MEPI, which aims to train Yemeni media representatives on decentralization, enhancing transparency and social participation.

Mr. Ameen Al-Maqtari, Undersecretary of Local Administrative Ministry, praised the efforts of SEMC in enhancing the decentralization and social participation in decision-making at local level. He also pointed out to the continuation of the partnership between SEMC & Local Administrative Ministry in this field.

Mr. Al-Maqtari explained that SEMC deserves a prize of Fiscal Decentralization in Yemen compared to its efforts in this field. He also, pointed out the importance of rise awareness on fiscal decentralization ,because it considered the core of federalism and without money fiscal decentralization cannot be applied.

SEMC is non-profit civil society organization working on qualification and awareness of economic issues, enhancing the transparency and the good governance, social participation in decision-making, and creating professional media.
