A training workshop of “Solutions Journalism” for Hadramawt journalists

The Studies & Economic Media Center (SEMC) has concluded on Thursday, 28 September 2023, a training workshop entitled “Solutions Journalism” in Hadramawt governorate, east of the country (Yemen).

The Workshop was organized by, the SEMC in cooperation with the Cultural Attaché of the U.S. Embassy to Yemen, in which eighteen (18) journalists have been benefited.

The Executive Director of the SEMC, Mohammed Ismail, said: “we have ensured that this form of Journalism has its presence in Yemen; Given the need imposed by the status quo of the country, noting that the SEMC is seeking to enhance the value of the Press and bring it closer to people’s lives and aspirations. While at the same time hoping that the outputs will be tangible so as to reflect positively on society and the country at large, he added.

For its part, the Head of the Cultural Attaché of the U.S. Embassy to Yemen, Jennifer Sutton, pointed out the importance of this workshop, especially in light of the spread of negative news. This goes beyond providing inspiring stories and experiences through which citizens can find solutions to the social and economic problems they face, she added.

Sutton stressed that the U.S. Embassy to Yemen will work to enhance male and female journalists’ writing skills in accordance with solutions journalism practices, and produce press materials through which to provide actionable solutions given the situation in the country.

During the Training Workshop, participants have learned about the Solutions Journalism, its characteristics and principles of solution-based journalistic writing, as well as the skill of specialized writing and ways of utilizing the new media that reflects positively on society.

Nahid Balala, one of the women journalists participating in the training Workshop, said that she had benefited, and realized that the Solutions Journalism is the future of Journalism, the actual alternative to traditional journalism because it seeks to solve concrete societal problems on the ground and to find and explain repetitive responses to the problem in a critical and clear manner.

Balala added: The Workshop is deemed as a paradigm shift in identifying tools and methods of Solutions Journalism to share success experiments around the World.

Qais al-Dawni said that the Workshop was a positive addition to his career, and the skills gained over three days will be a starting point for journalistic work that contributes to finding solutions to various social and economic issues, enhancing the role of the media in serving societies and creating a solid relationship between the media and the citizen through citizens’ participation in the development of solutions and visions to overcome many status quo problems.

This Workshop is part of a series of training workshops carried out by the SEMC, targeted (83) journalists from various Yemeni governorates over the past three months.

The Yemen Solutions Journalism Project, implemented by the SEMC in partnership with the U.S. Embassy, aiming to build the capacity of journalists and disseminate solutions journalism methods and tools so that they can be employed by journalists and workers to serve the community.

It is worth saying that the SEMC is a civil society organization working for a successful and transparent Yemeni economy by promoting awareness of economic and development issues, promoting transparency and good governance, and creating professional and professional media.
