The Climate and Energy Transition Network launched a specialized training workshop today focused on environmental journalism and the right to access information. The workshop, held in collaboration with Article 19, will last for two days and is attended by around 20 journalists from various Yemeni provinces.
In his opening remarks, Mohammed Ismail, Executive Director of the Studies and Economic Media Center (SEMC), expressed his pleasure at launching the first environmental journalism training workshop offered by the center to network members. Ismail emphasized that the center, through the network, will soon provide more training and opportunities for a larger number of journalists. He stressed the importance of building journalists’ capacities in this rapidly evolving field.
Karimm Belhadj, the workshop trainer and Quality Officer at Article 19, welcomed the participating journalists. Belhadj noted that the organization aims to strengthen its presence in Yemen in the coming years in collaboration with its local partner, SEMC. He affirmed the organization’s commitment to providing the necessary support to enhance journalists’ knowledge and skills in covering environmental issues and the right to access information.
In November 2023, SEMC announced the launch of the Climate and Energy Transition Network in Yemen, aiming to shed light on environmental and climate issues and develop journalists’ capabilities to cover rapid developments in this field. The network opened for membership in early June 2024, and more than 200 journalists from various provinces have joined so far.
The network aims to enhance media coverage of environmental and climate issues in Yemen, providing the necessary support and training for journalists to develop their skills in this field.
This workshop is the first step towards achieving this goal, with the center planning to organize more training events and future workshops to strengthen journalists’ capacities and enable them to access and effectively disseminate accurate environmental information.
