Yamaniyat Conference to take place tomorrow in Taiz

On Thursday, October 10, the Yamaniyat Conference will take place in the city of Taiz, organized by the Studies and Economic Media Center (SEMC), and supported by the Canal France International (CFI).

The Conference “Empowering Women through Media for Peace” will bring together more than 100 male and female journalists, human rights activists, advocates for women’s rights, peacebuilders, and representatives from media institutions, platforms, and civil society organizations from various Yemeni governorates.

The Conference, which will be hybrid, in person and online via Zoom, aims to highlight efforts to empower women in peacebuilding and to enable their access to decision-making positions. It will also emphasize the importance of addressing women’s issues, supporting them, and advocating for them through media.

The Conference sessions will address a range of topics, starting with a presentation of the Yamaniyat Project, implemented by the SEMC with the CFI’s support over the past six months. Discussions will then explore future pathways concerning media, women, and peace, highlighting the importance of partnerships between media and civil society to achieve the desired impact. The sessions will also consider potential future international interventions to strengthen the presence of Yemeni women. Furthermore, the Conference will announce the winning stories at the Project, selected from dozens of stories developed and published at Hodaj Platform during the past period.

SEMC’s Executive Manager, Mohamed Ismail, confirmed that holding the Conference in person represents a significant chance for journalists and women journalists, involved in Makanati and Yamaniyat projects, and those who advocates for women’s rights to generate collaborative visions and ideas that enhance women’s presence and strengthen their position amid the ongoing disregard from decision-makers and conflicting parties regarding their substantial roles over the past years.

Ismail urged for effective participation in the Conference via Zoom, as it is the first of its kind in Yemen to bring together male and female journalists in person since Yemen’s war outbreak in March 2015.

H.E. Catherine Corm-Kammoun, the Ambassador of France to Yemen, and H.E. Riyadh Yaseen, the Ambassador of Yemen to France, will take part in the Conference as well as the Senior Deputy of Taiz Governor, Abdul Qawi Al-Makhlafi.

Additionally, Mr. Alan DREANIC, Deputy General-Director of Canal France International, and Mustafa Nasr, Chairman of the SEMC, will also participate in the Conference.
