On Monday, the Studies & Economic Media Center (SEMC) wrapped up its online training course, “Artificial Intelligence and Its Applications in Journalism,” hosted on Zoom. The course was part of the “Sustainability of Independent Media Institutions” project in Yemen, with 20 journalists from independent media organizations across the country taking part. The course focused on using AI to enhance journalistic practices and improve the quality of media content.
The workshop explored key topics, starting with an introduction to artificial intelligence and its impact on modern journalism. It also covered the technologies involved in content creation and delved into practical AI applications, such as automated news production, boosting investigative journalism, and how AI is shaping media business models.
Abdul Latif Hajj Mohammed, the course trainer, explained, “Organizing these workshops reflects the forward-thinking vision of SEMC, as AI technologies continue to evolve rapidly. The influence of AI on journalism will be profound, especially in areas like audience engagement, story discovery, and improving overall efficiency.” He added, “We discussed how journalists can harness AI to boost their productivity and achieve better outcomes in digital journalism.”
Ahmed Al-Jabri, General Director of “Watani FM” radio and a course participant, commented: “The AI workshop provided us with a unique opportunity to understand AI technologies and their potential in transforming journalistic work. The insights gained from this course will certainly enhance our journalistic output.”
Jalal Al-Soufi, project coordinator at SEMC, highlighted the workshop’s significance, saying, “This course is part of our ongoing efforts to support and strengthen the capabilities of independent media institutions in Yemen. We believe that artificial intelligence is a powerful tool for improving media content and increasing journalistic efficiency.” Al-Soufi added, “The workshop plays a key role in fostering innovation in independent journalism, equipping journalists with the necessary knowledge and skills to adapt to the rapidly evolving media landscape.”
