The Studies and Economic Media Center (SEMC) organized two training sessions on “Media and Information Literacy” Today, for students from 26 September Boys’ School and Martyr Al-Hakimi Girls’ School in the city of Taiz, southwest Yemen. The events come as part of the pre-conference activities leading up to the Fourth Yemeni Media Conference, organized by the Marsadak (Yemeni Media Freedom Observatory) affiliated with of the SEMC, in conjunction with the Global Media and Information Literacy Week.
A total of 75 high school students participated in the two sessions, which were delivered by Dr. Mujib Al-Humaidi, an expert in media and information literacy. The training aimed to introduce students to key concepts in media literacy and to strengthen their ability to engage responsibly and critically with the digital environment and AI, promoting positive screen use while reducing its negative effects on learning, behavior, and time management.
The two sessions covered several themes, including media literacy in daily life, challenges of the digital environment, risks of excessive technology use, and the role of Artificial Intelligence in shaping human awareness. Practical exercises and interactive discussions encouraged students to think critically and to better understand the risks and opportunities of the digital world.
In his opening remarks, Mr. Abdulhakim Sharaf, Advisor to the Governor of Taiz for Education Affairs, praised the SEMC’s initiative in conducting awareness sessions targeting school students, emphasizing the importance of such activities in guiding young people toward positive technological use and fostering values of knowledge and critical thinking.
For his part, Mohammed Esmail, Executive Manager of the SEMC, stated that organizing this session reflects the SEMC’s commitment to promoting media and information literacy, especially among school students, considering it an essential life skill in an era of rapid digital expansion and widespread content circulation.
Esmail added that these activities form part of the Global Media and  Information Literacy Week, which aims to strengthen public awareness and protect society from disinformation and unreliable content, contributing to the building of a more conscious and responsible digital community.
It is worth noting that the Studies and Economic Media Center (SEMC) is a member of the UNESCO-affiliated Media and Information Literacy Alliance (MIL Alliance) and continues its efforts to spread media literacy culture in Yemen through training programs and awareness sessions targeting various social groups, particularly journalists, media students, and school students.
