Launching the training program for journalists on data journalism in Yemen

 

The network of data journalists of the Studies and Economic Media Center (SEMC) in Yemen launched on Saturday the first training workshop on “The Fundamentals of data journalism”, with the participation of 15 journalists from various Yemeni governorates.

The Executive Director of SEMC, Mohammed Ismail said: “during the opening that this training workshop was aimed to enable fifteen journalists from various Yemeni governorates on the basics of data journalism and exploration phase, through debriefing and the presentation of data-supported journalistic stories in line with the era of digital revolution”.

In addition; Ismail said that, “this course is one of a series of training workshops to be carried out by the network during the next phase, through which we aim to train at least 60 journalists. Participants will work after training to produce journalistic articles under the direct supervision of the Network”.

On the other hand, the coordinator of the journalistic network Mujahid Hamoud confirmed that, “this workshop is part of the network of data journalists project to qualify and train more than 60 journalists from various Yemeni governorates in nine training workshops”.

Hamoud confirmed that, “the interest of the network of data journalists in training and qualifying a promising journalistic generation working on data journalism with high professionalism in line with the new digital transformation in the journalism at the international and local levels where data journalism is the future of the new media”.

Lamia al-Sharabi, a participant in the workshop said that she was confident that the session would provide her with many things she did not know about data journalism.

Also, Al Sharabi added: “I was hearing about data journalism, but I had never attended a workshop in this field.”

The network of data journalists in Yemen was launched in March 2017 under the slogan “For a modern data-supported Yemeni journalism”, the first of its kind in Yemen.

The network aims to enhance the presence of data journalism in the journalistic field by building the capacity of journalists and disseminating modern data journalism methods and tools that are easy to use by journalists and media workers in Yemen.
