Studies and Economic Media Center (SEMC), in cooperation with the US embassy in Yemen, has held a training workshop for media professionals from independent media organizations in Yemen.

At the opening of the function, SEMC chairman, Mustafa Nassr, said that the workshop was intended to train journalists working for independent media outfits in the specific yardsticks for impartial media coverage of events with a view to promoting the professionalism of independent media, as well as boosting their role in society.

Nasser said that impartiality is very significant for media coverage, being the real capital of any media organization, pointing out that the Yemeni media have unfortunately become partial in terms of covering the events taking place in the country.

Lots of Yemeni media have broken the norms of professionalism and credibility, thus stemming the development of autonomous media outfits, many of which have gone bust, which reflects negatively on society, Nassr said.

The training course, run by journalist Aref Abu Hatem, is meant for 25 journalists from independent media outlets , including newspapers and news websites. It is also in line with economic media promotion project, which is undertaken by SEMC, in collaboration with the Sana’a-based US embassy.

SEMC is a non-profit civil society organization seeking to spread awareness of economic issues, and to enhance transparency and citizens’ engagement in decision-making , in addition to creating a professional media.
