Restrictions on Press Freedom

In a dangerous move, the Ministry of Social Affairs (which is considered to belong to the Southern Transitional Council, according to the political party distribution of ministerial portfolios) has suspended the activities of the Yemeni Journalists Syndicate in Aden, putting the lives of its leaders at risk and increasing the pressure on free press in the country.

Although Prime Minister Ahmed bin Mubarak directed the cancellation of any measures targeting the activities of the Yemeni Journalists Syndicate, the ministry continues to insist on suspending its activities under the pretext of not rectifying its legal status.

Restrictive measures and arbitrary practices have been carried out by the Southern Transitional Council against the Syndicate, starting with the seizure of the syndicate’s headquarters in the early months of the war, followed by the storming of its headquarters last year and taking control, and culminating in suspending its activities.
