The Media Freedoms Observatory in Yemen released its monthly report “Infographic” on the status of media freedoms and the arbitrary practices against journalists and media outlets, documented (7) cases during May 2024.
the violations recorded by the Observatory have varied four interrogations and the prosecution
and two incitement And an electronic hack against journalist Ibad Al-Jaradi due to his media activities.
the Observatory recorded five violations in the governorates of Hadhramaut and Aden and Sana ‘a and Taiz and Marib .
Sentence of six months’ imprisonment
On May 5, the Hadramawt Governorate Public Funds Prosecutor issued a suspended sentence of six months’ imprisonment against journalist Ali Salmin Al-obthani and to pay a compensation of Yemeni Rial 200 thousand.
On 19 December 2022, the Funds Prosecutor’s Office summoned the journalist, Al-obthani. His first investigation was conducted on 22 December, and he was released by commercial guarantee.
Meanwhile, Hadramawt University charged him with “defamation of a scientific edifice”, after he published many posts on his Facebook page.
Also, at the beginning of May, the Funds Prosecutor summoned the journalist Ahmed Omar Bahmadi because of a communication submitted by the Ministry of Education Office in Gail Bawazir in Hadramawt, following the publication of many posts in solidarity with teachers, which coincided with the growing protests by teachers to demand their rights in the governorate.
Despite our continued calls for respect for freedom of opinion and expression, the security and judicial authorities in Hadramawt continue to violate these freedoms and insist that journalists be tried in courts not competent in publishing and press cases.
