Launching the First AI Training Course in Journalism

On Sunday morning, the Studies and Economic Media Center (SEMC) launched its first training course on “Strategies for Digital Content Production and the Use of AI Tools in Journalism,” held in parallel with the opening of the Fourth Yemeni Media Conference.

The course, which runs until November 5, aims to enhance the capacity of independent media institutions and outlets in Yemen to leverage AI tools to improve the quality of media content. It is implemented within the project “Enhancing the Sustainability of Media Institutions in Yemen,” in partnership with the National Endowment for Democracy (NED).

Mohammed Esmail, Executive Manager of the SEMC, explained that this course is part of a comprehensive plan to build the capacities of Yemeni journalists in digital transformation and modern media production. He emphasized that linking these training programs to the Fourth Yemeni Media Conference seeks to create integration between theoretical discussions and practical applications, and to highlight the importance of AI as a supportive tool for advancing independent media in Yemen.

For his part, international trainer Abdullatif Haj noted that the workshop will discuss the profound transformations brought about by artificial intelligence in the media environment, and ways to use it responsibly in the service of truth and the public interest.

Haj added: “Over twelve hours of dialogue and experimentation, we will explore the concept of AI-assisted journalism, usage ethics, and tools for verification, editing, and intelligent content analysis. This workshop marks the beginning of a new path that redefines the relationship between the journalist and technology, between the profession and the algorithm, in pursuit of a more innovative and future-conscious Yemeni press.”

Twenty-two journalists, representing independent media institutions and platforms from eight Yemeni governorates, are participating in the course, receiving hands-on training in digital content production, audience analysis, and expanding the digital presence of media organizations.

It is worth noting that the Studies and Economic Media Center (SEMC) is a civil society organization working toward a successful and transparent Yemeni economy by raising awareness of economic and development issues, promoting transparency and good governance, and supporting the creation of professional and high-quality media.
