SEMC Holds Training Workshop on Donor Engagement and Proposal Writing

The Studies and Economic Media Center (SEMC) conducted an online training workshop on Saturday via Zoom titled “Strategies for Communicating with Donors and Writing Funding Proposals.” The workshop was organized as part of the Program for Enhancing the Sustainability of Independent Media Institutions in Yemen, in partnership with the National Endowment for Democracy (NED).

The training workshop, which brought together representatives from 22 independent media organizations across eight Yemeni governorates, aimed to enable media institutions to understand the fundamentals of communication with donors and strengthen their capacities to develop clear and persuasive funding proposals through intensive practical training.

During the workshop, Mustafa Nasr, Chairman of the SEMC presented several key concepts related to how donors think and the requirements they typically seek in funding proposals. He also highlighted mechanisms for identifying appropriate funding opportunities for media institutions.

The workshop further covered skills related to defining problems and transforming them into fundable project ideas, as well as building project objectives and results in a professional and concise manner. Participants were also introduced to the basic structure of funding proposals, including activities, expected results, indicators, and budgeting.

For his part, Mohammed Esmail, Executive Manager of the SEMC, affirmed that the workshop is part of the SEMC’s broader efforts to strengthen the capacities of independent media institutions in Yemen, contributing to their sustainability and the development of their institutional and professional performance.

Esmail noted that the workshop will help participating media organizations develop more professional project proposals, improve their ability to present ideas and communicate with donors, and enable each institution to prepare an initial draft project proposal and a simplified template that can be used in the future when applying for funding opportunities.

The workshop also addressed common mistakes in preparing funding proposals and ways to avoid them, before participants engaged in a practical exercise to develop a sample project proposal using a simplified template. This exercise aimed to help media institutions refine practical and fundable project ideas.

The Studies and Economic Media Center (SEMC) is a civil society organization working to promote a successful and transparent Yemeni economy by raising awareness of economic and development issues, supporting transparency and good governance, and contributing to the development of professional and responsible media.
