A Harsh Week for Journalists in Yemen

With the escalation of the latest military confrontations in Aden and some other southern governorates, violations against Yemeni journalists and local media have intensified. While journalist Nour Sereeb, the editor of Al-Watan Today Newspaper, was subjected to incitement campaign and death threats through social media webs. In the same time, some gunmen broke into journalist Ali Saleh Al- Essa’s house, working at 14th October Newspaper and tampered with its things. Journalist Ahmed Maher also was tracked, therefore, he had to to escape outside Yemen by necessity. After the Southern Transitional Council (STC) took control of Aden, a limited number of journalists were allowed to practice their works, while the rest of the journalists in the official 14 October Newspaper as well as radio and television were banned from work.
In Taiz city, armed men belonging to the military intelligence broke into a hotel in the city, arrested three journalists and confiscated their phones and electronic devices. The journalists are Mounir Talal, Yahya Al-Baithi and Mahfodh Al-Baithi. They were put in prison for three days before being released later.
Twenty-one Yemeni journalists are still in jails up to now; 18 of them are in Houthi group prisons. Some of them have been in prisons for more than four years, and others in Yemeni government prisons in Al -Mahra Governorate.
The fate of journalist Mohammed Al Maqri, detained by al-Qaeda while in control of Mukalla in 2015, remains unknown.
