SEMC trains 14 journalists from eight Yemeni governorates

On Wednesday 24 January 2024, in Taiz, southwest of the country, SEMC concluded a workshop on “Enhancing women’s participation in the peacebuilding process in Yemen.”

The three-day workshop, in which 14 journalists from the governorates of Sana’a, Aden, Taiz, Hudaydah, Hadramawt, Mahra, Shabwa and Ma ‘areb took part, centred around digital advocacy to promote women’s participation in the peacebuilding process in Yemen.

The workshop was aimed at enabling women access to decision-making positions in the institutions they represent.

In addition, the Executive Director of SEMC, Mohamed Ismail, confirmed that the Centre’s efforts to build the capacity of 14 journalists from independent media organizations and women-led organizations on advocacy skills and tools; with a view to developing a plan to advocate for the inclusion of women in peacebuilding in Yemen.

According to Ismail, media institutions and initiatives will work in conjunction with women-led organizations, journalists who will later be trained within the Yemeni project in an integrated manner, ensuring women’s involvement in peacebuilding through the media.

Ismail added: “Organizations and initiatives led by women and media organizations during the life cycle of the project, which lasts for one year, will hold periodic meetings through which action priorities and interventions will be identified to ensure Yemeni women’s participation in the peace industry.”

In the same context, Sujwa Azerbaijan, media and communication Officer of Bridges for Peace and Coexistence, expressed the great utilization of participating female journalists and their professional expertise in the ways and means of transmitting stories, facts, evidence in an objective and attractive manner, the extent to which this affects the formation of public opinion, and pressure on decision makers.

The editoriwomen andr of the TA Platform, Abeer Abdullah, said: “The workshop is important to give women journalists new skills on properly advocating for women’s issues, promoting their participation in consolidating the peace process in Yemen, both in preparing and developing an advocacy plan, as well as raising awareness to confront extremism, gender-based violence, and protecting women, and supporting them to participate in political decision-making.”

It is worth mentioning that the workshop was carried out within the framework of the Yemeni project, which aims to enhance women’s presence in decision-making positions, ensure their participation in peacebuilding processes and advocate their issues in the Yemeni media in partnership with the French Media Development Agency (CFI).

The Studies & Economic Media Center is a non-profit civil society organization working for rehabilitation and awareness of economic issues, enhancing transparency and citizen participation in decision-making, creating professional media, empowering youth and women economically and promoting their role in building peace.
