Virtual Meeting Discusses Journalism’s Role in Peacebuilding

On Tuesday, the fourth virtual meeting took place between the Hodaj Platform team and women-led civil society organizations, alongside media organizations, journalists, and representatives from the Yamaniyat Project and Makanati Network, to support women’s issues in Yemen.

Organized by the Studies and Economic Media Centre in partnership with the French Media Development Agency (CFI), the meeting is part of a Yemeni project aimed at enhancing women’s participation in the peacebuilding process.

Yamaniyat Project Coordinator Haifa Al-Odaini emphasized, “The meeting aims to enhance efforts in producing journalistic content that supports women’s involvement in peacebuilding, aligning with the shared objectives of the Yemeni project and women-led civil society organizations.”

Al-Odaini added, “This meeting is part of a series of regular sessions designed to foster cooperation between media partners and organizations within the Yamaniyat project framework.”

Hodaj Director Marwa Al-Areqi reviewed the platform’s efforts in producing journalistic content and its alignment with the project’s main goals, detailing the process of proposal review and acceptance.

Journalist Bassam Ghaber discussed how to submit proposals, outlining the methodology and criteria for selection according to the Hodaj platform’s editorial policy and style guide. Ghaber highlighted that the platform focuses on providing equal opportunities for journalists to cover women’s issues, with an emphasis on stories grounded in thorough preliminary research and contextual relevance, whether related to environmental, health, or peacebuilding topics.

At the end of the meeting, journalists contributed various insights. Discussions included coverage of overlooked issues and challenges faced due to security concerns in some Yemeni regions, emphasizing that journalists should not become the story themselves.

The Studies and Economic Media Centre (SEMC) is a non-profit organization dedicated to raising awareness about economic issues, promoting transparency, engaging citizens in decision-making, and advancing professional media. SEMC aims to empower youth and women economically and enhance their role in peacebuilding.
